In Memory of Lost Friends

DICK RHEINSCHILD - KV6G

Following is a reprint of parts of an earlier Newsletter, with fond memories of an old friend, now departed. KV6G was kind enough to invite me into his shack while I was recovering from bypass surgery. He taught me 20 WPM CW, just enough to squeak by my successful Extra ticket. Someone had once told me that Dick Rheinschild was gruff and not very likeable. He was dead wrong! Dick was one of the greatest Elmers to exist in our time or any other, and he had a dry, clever sense of humor unchallenged by most everyone. On top of all this, he was a good, decent friend to me, to the Del Norte Amateur Radio Club, and to thousands of hams and non-hams throughout the world. I join with them in gratitude for Dick's life, and to say, "We miss you."

Recognize this guy? If you don't, read his hat. He's shown inside his shack probably working some QRP DX. Dick Rheinschild, barefoot and with power. More recently, however, Dick has decided to accept some real challenges in going after contacts using 2-3 watts, or less! Dick's been retired for a couple years or so due to health. He has been our Club VP, the President, and now serves as Treasurer. He never seems too busy to help out anyone with CW lessons or practice, license upgrades, assistance with electronics repairs or building, and just about anything a good ham brings to our hobby. He and spouse Mary Ruth keep busy with family, grandkids, etc., KV6G On The Air
and they have a big ol' lovable dog who likes to mosey into the shack and get his head rubbed. I think there are some cats, too, but their moseying is sort of kept in check by the big K9 - I forget his name. Dick has 68 QSL cards based on his QRP activity, and hopes for many more. He will get them, too! If you could see out the window there behind Dick, you'd behold one of the nicest antenna towers in the county. He has a
Dick Rheinschild - KV6G big 4-element quad beam, 2 dipoles, and a vertical for 2 meters on the VHF side of things. Dick is the other major player on the Repeater Committee. He has helped Lindy, WA6ZDO, numerous times in doing the repair & remodel work to both our repeaters, making them not only functional, but certainly the state-of-the-art pieces of equipment we often use, but can be proud of when we do. My simple words don't adequately express appreciation, but thanks, Dick. Another shot of you know whom. I probably should mention Dick's equipment. Nah, I'll let you see some of it here and then get over to Dick's place to see it for yourself. Again, you won't be sorry, and please, don't take just my word for it this time.
